Nine Mile Point is located on the Westbank of Jefferson Parish. We are actually located across the Mississippi River from the city of New Orleans.
Nine Mile Point is listed as an Historical District due to the rich history and plantations located in the area. The name was derived from the navigational marker in the Mississippi River. The area is located nine miles up river from Jackson Square. This navigational marker is mentioned in many famous books, including Huck Fin. The area is a mix of residential, industrial ,and commercial. It is one of the last areas in Jefferson Parish with area to expand.
The Nine Mile Point Fire Department was established in 1958 to protect the area of Pecan Groove. The members obtained the first fire engine from the city of New Orleans. The second truck was purchased with money collected door to door, and many dinners hosted by the department. The department today has a class 3 fire insurance rating.
The Nine Mile Point Fire Department is located in the 7th Fire District of Jefferson Parish. We are one of five departments located in this district. The other departments are Bridge City, Avondale, Herbert Wallace, and Live Oak.
